5 Allergy Myths Debunked: Get the Facts, Find Relief

Allergies – those annoying immune system mix-ups – can be a real drag!

And with so much misinformation floating around, separating fact from fiction can feel more challenging than finding a matching sock in the dryer (amirite?!).

As an allergist and immunologist who's walked this allergy path with my patients –– and on a personal level! –– I'm passionate about busting those pesky myths.

Because getting accurate information puts you back in the driver’s seat and allows you to make informed decisions for your health. So, let’s dive in and debunk some common misconceptions.

Myth #1: "Allergies Change Every 7 Years – It’s Like Clockwork!"

I hear this one in clinic all the time. The reality is, there's no such thing as a 7-year allergy expiration date! Our immune systems are dynamic – constantly responding, reacting, and recalibrating –– and allergies are a part of this dance.

Yes, our allergies can shift over time. They can increase or decrease with factors such as environment, stress, hormones, and even changes in gut bacteria. While for some, allergies improve with age, everyone's path is unique. If you think yours are changing, chat with an allergist.

Myth #2: "Egg Allergy? Skip the Flu Shot!"

The thought of needles makes some cringe! But, it’s mostly a myth that egg allergies mean skipping that crucial flu shot.

Most flu vaccines contain only trace amounts of egg protein. In severe egg allergy cases, there are safe ways to get vaccinated, usually under the watchful eye of an allergist at a specialized clinic.

Myth #3: "Local Honey Cures Hay Fever!"

While promising preliminary research supports manuka honey as a potential remedy (more to come on this one!), sadly, it's largely a myth that local honey cures hay fever.

Yes, local honeys contain small amounts of pollen. Some people believe small doses, introduced early on – especially for kids! –– might increase tolerance. But ingesting local honeys may trigger reactions, worsening hay fever in people with sensitivities.

Myth #4: "Pets are Free Allergy Shots"

We love those fur-babies! But living with pet dander doesn’t provide the same protection as immunotherapy. While exposure might help some people, it isn't a replacement for medical treatment!

Myth #5: "Iodine & Shellfish Allergies Are Linked!"

Nope. Shellfish allergies aren't related to iodine sensitivities, like the reaction some have to that iodine contrast dye they use before an x-ray or CT scan!

Iodine is a crucial mineral. Shellfish allergy comes from different proteins. It's a common misconception I hear, and that clear explanation always leads to so much relief – I love helping people avoid cutting out things unnecessarily!

My Allergy Approach: Facts and Individualized Treatment

Allergies don’t have to rule your world. Just as I work closely with each of my patients, having accurate information, a targeted approach based on sensitivities and exposures, and working closely with an allergist are all key to managing that immune system chaos with more confidence.
